چکیده

While liquid phase exfoliation can be used to produce nanosheets stabilized in polymer solutions, very little is known about the resultant nanosheet size, thickness or monolayer content. Here we use semi-quantitative spectroscopic metrics based on extinction, Raman and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy to investigate these parameters for WS2 nanosheets exfoliated in aqueous polyvinylalcohol (PVA) solutions. By measuring Raman and PL simultaneously, we can track the monolayer content via the PL/Raman intensity ratio while varying processing conditions. We find the monolayer population to be maximized for a stabilizing polymer concentration of 2 g/L. In addition, the monolayer content can be controlled via the centrifugation conditions, exceeding 5% by mass in some cases. These techniques have allowed us to track the ratio of PL/Raman in a droplet of polymer-stabilized WS2 nanosheets as the water evaporates during composite formation. We find no evidence of nanosheet aggregation under these conditions although the PL becomes dominated by trion emission as drying proceeds and the balance of doping from PVA/water changes. Finally, we have produced bulk PVA/WS2 composites by freeze drying where >50% of the monolayers remain unaggregated, even at WS2 volume fractions as high as 10%.

Synthesis of Large-Area WS2 monolayers with Exceptional Photoluminescence

Monolayer WS2 offers great promise for use in optical devices due to its direct bandgap and high photoluminescence intensity. While fundamental investigations can be performed on exfoliated material, large-area and high quality materials are essential for implementation of technological applications. In this work, we synthesize monolayer WS2 under various controlled conditions and characterize ...

High Yield Exfoliation of WS2 Crystals into 1-2 Layer Semiconducting Nanosheets and Efficient Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution from WS2/CdS Nanorod Composites.

Monolayer WS2 has interesting properties as a direct bandgap semiconductor, photocatalyst, and electrocatalyst, but it is still a significant challenge to prepare this material in colloidal form by liquid-phase exfoliation (LPE). Here, we report the preparation of 1-2 layer semiconducting WS2 nanosheets in a yield of 18-22 wt % by a modified LPE method that involves preintercalation with substo...

Facile Synthesis of Heterostructured WS2/Bi2MoO6 as High-Performance Visible-Light-Driven Photocatalysts

In this paper, novel WS2/Bi2MoO6 heterostructured photocatalysts were successfully fabricated via a facile solvothermal growth method using pre-exfoliated layered WS2 nanoslices as a substrate. The structure, morphology, and optical properties of the as-prepared WS2/Bi2MoO6 samples were characterized by XRD, XPS, SEM, TEM (HRTEM), and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS). Results confirmed ...

Liquid-crystalline polymer composites with CdS nanorods: structure and optical properties.

We report on the structure, uniaxial orientation, and photoluminescent properties of CdS nanorods that form stable nanocomposites with smectic C hydrogen-bonded polymers from the family of poly(4-(n-acryloyloxyalkoxy)benzoic acids. TEM analysis of microtomed films of nanocomposites reveals that CdS nanorods form small domains that are homogeneously distributed in the LC polymer matrix. They und...

Pitch-Length Independent Threshold Voltage of Polymer/Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Nano-Composites

Polymer/cholesteric liquid crystal (ChLC) nano-composites consisting of mesogenic monomers and LCs have nano-sized LC domains dispersed in an anisotropic polymer matrix. They exhibit characteristics not observed in conventional ChLCs, such as sub-millisecond and “deformation-free” electro-optic tuning of the selective reflection band; however, their driving voltage is high compared to conventio...
